SKY Spotlight: Featuring SKY Big SIS Tatty
21st June 2022Tell us about yourself?
My real name is Mary Martha. When I was in high school, I used to like Tatiana Manois songs since they inspired me. So people started calling me Tatty. Tatty/Martha is an ambitious, hardworking girl who sees herself as a SKY girl and a tech entrepreneur on the rise!
So, have you always wanted to be tech entrepreneur?
Yes, technology has always been my thing. I remember when I was nine, I would try and spoil my Dad’s DVD and the try to fix it. Imagine! I still didn’t know what I was doing 😂
What is your idea and what inspired you to come up with it?
When I was young, we used to stay in Kibra Slum, so I saw what people were going through. Most people in slum areas do not have access to water because of long lines at the water vendors. I read that many people were using tech to solve problems like this so I told myself “Why not to come up with something unique to solve this problem?” and BOOM!...that’s what I did.
I came up with a system that provides automated water called “Auto water”. It supplies water automatically to the user when they are at the water vendor. They pay through mobile banking using a special code that they get on their phone and then the water is instantly available to them.
What do you think about girls joining the tech world?
We need more role models of tomorrow especially young girls, so I’m all about girls joining the tech world. We shouldn’t be afraid. It’s not difficult once you put your mind to it. Kama it’s your thing, try and get access to tutorials online for coding, ama if you have computer classes in school, you can take that as well. Start pole pole and you’ll get there.
What’s one thing your friends would say you love?
😂 LOL, I think my friends will say I love tech, making things and also dancing.
What role have your friends played in the journey?
My friends have been very encouraging and supported my dreams. They also do their thing and so tunasaidianga ku-grow. We are similar lakini we are not exactly the same so everyone respects each other in their decisions, which is cool.
